Types of Aquarium Tanks

Aquarium Tank Care You'll discover that there are quite a few types of aquarium tanks to choose from when you start considering where to get a saltwater aquarium and where to put it (for a very long time). If one of those doesn't suit your fancy, you can always make your own to fit your space perfectly.

Very often when people begin the task of constructing their custom saltwater aquarium, they will buy a large tank – even if they have a smaller, freshwater one available to use. There are nearly as many types of aquarium tanks as there are spaces to put them in, against or on. The needs of your space, the type of marine community you plan to establish and your budget will all determine what you get.

Size Matters

While it's easy to overestimate how much space you have for a new saltwater aquarium, simply getting out a tape measure and actually measuring the spot you've got in mind is the first step. Be sure to leave plenty of room for you to get around the tank to perform maintenance. You won't be moving it even an inch when full of water, so where it sits is where it will stay. Most saltwater tanks should hold at least 25 gallons. You'll also need a very sturdy base – strong enough to easily hold up 10 pounds per gallon. You may need to make allowances for placing the stand and aquarium near a load-bearing wall. Acrylic weighs far less than glass, so if weight is a very serious consideration, you might want to avoid glass, even though it's far sturdier.

Types and Styles

Not all tanks are rectangular. There are many types of aquarium tanks. Some people have great bubbles they've installed in their walls. Others build their own to match the dimensions of the space or have them moulded into curved or unusual shapes. They can have as many sides as you wish, and be shaped to be viewed from against a wall or from both sides.

Sometimes you can purchase a tank, filtration system and stand as a package deal. Be sure each component is exactly what you are looking for, since they've been designed as a specific system for basic saltwater aquarium needs.

DIY Tank Building

If you have a more unusual community planned, or have some very odd dimensions in mind, you may need to consider some more exotic types of aquarium tanks.

You can hire us to do custom work for you, or build your aquarium tank yourself. Consult a book for plans to make sure, and follow the directions to the letter. Be sure you get a tight fit and give an extra long "wet run" before installing the aquascape.
